While a select few of her peers couldn’t give a damn about school, Devyn breathes it in. She has ever since junior high. Devyn has always been gifted with intelligence. When she was growing up, her mother could afford very little for her leisure time. One day, she was rummaging through her stuff and Devyn found a book. It was difficult for her to read, but she soon became infatuated with it. Before long, reading was a regular habit. Upon entering junior high, Devyn worked feverishly at doing her very best at taking notes. If her teacher began a lecture, she’d take note of it just in case. On countless occasions, her excess note taking has worked to her benefit. After a long year, she’ll save her notes in the case the subject will one day spring up once again. It’s no surprise the brunette is often found at the library. She knows the public one in the city like the back of her hand. The one in the school is resourceful, but it can’t compare to the epic variety located at Aschfield Public Library. A majority of Devyn’s leisure time is spent studying her text books. When it’s summer, she’ll push herself to try and learn new material before the beginning of the school year. Devyn’s studious nature is not only accepted in her school environment, but also praised. It’s no secret to say teachers absolutely enjoy her enthusiasm for school. SELFLESS Given the circumstances Devyn endures, her selfless nature is quite the surprise to people who know about her lowly financial status. Devyn isn’t sure why she insists on giving back to a community that’s so cruel to her, but she does it anyway. Devyn doesn’t blame anyone for the way she is forced to live. Her giving nature helps her understand it’s not that bad. It also helps mask her situation. The more she gives, the less people suspect anything is wrong. Besides, she likes making people happy. It brings her great joy to make a sacrifice for someone resulting in their happiness. She especially loves giving back to the elderly population. Once a week (or every other week if she’s too busy), she visits the senior center with treats she had baked to visit them. She’d much rather volunteer her time listening to their stories about their long-dead husbands or World War II than going out and partying the summer away. That’s not her thing. If she’s in a store and she and another girl see a cute, inexpensive top but it happens to be the last one, she’ll give the girl the top. Devyn didn’t need it that bad. She has plenty of clothes at home. If Devyn goes into the lunchroom with hunger gnawing at her stomach and hears someone complaining about how starving they are, Dev’ll make sure to give them her lunch straightaway. She can manage to starve until she gets home. The hardest thing for Devyn to give away is her money. She’ll spare a quarter or two, but large amounts put her on edge. Clara already disagrees with her insistence on giving away food, clothing, and even her lunch, but if it made Devyn happy, there’s not much more she wants for her daughter than that. Devyn appreciates her understanding. She needs to give to be happy. INSECURE Society can be a bitch, and Devyn doesn’t want to be outright bitch slapped by it. With her financial status continuously rocky, she’s forced to feel as though any minute could be her last living in their already small, dingy mobile home. For the most part, Devyn is relatively honest and accepting of herself, but there are certain aspects of her life that make her turn her head from time to time when she hears murmurs behind her. As hinted above, her financial status is a major contribute to her insecurities. She shelters her financial status most days. She’s not ashamed of it. She knows her mother tries her best to do things for her, but she can’t help feeling envious of the students with money. She’s also insecure about her hobbies. Ever since Devyn can remember, she has been interested in dancing. Only her closest friends and mother have actually seen her dance. There are rumors that she is able to dance, but she often denies them. What’s a nerd like her supposed to know anything about “jerking” or “2-step?” If one were to see Devyn dance, they’d be able to tell she really loves it, but because she’s so afraid of someone badmouthing her for it, she keeps her talent on the down low. The general opinions about her also set her on edge. Most days, she’s known as the sweet, shy, nerdy girl. She has zero problems with that, but when rumors fly about Devyn being a secret heartbreaker or a bitch, she tends to freeze. Dev never ever ever never wants to upset anyone she meets. TIMID Because of her insecurities, Devyn is quite the timid chica when it comes to interacting with people. Upsetting people, especially people she cares about, is the equivalent of being locked in a tank with a school of hungry piranhas. Her decision-making process is often prolonged in order to try and fulfill the needs of everyone affected. Her decisions are never extraordinarily bold, either. When plans are made, she’s extremely lenient to change it up. Being stern comes with difficulty since she’s such a loving, friendly person. If provoked, it’s possible to bring out a Devyn never before seen, but someone is required to fuck a lot of shit up in order for her to even consider blowing up. Unless you get to know her, the Devyn you’ll be treated with is the shy, quiet wallflower she can be around the school campus. She comes off as boring or unintelligent by those judgmental folks. It adds to her insecurities, but what was a girl to do? By no means does she want to change how she is because some jerk doesn’t like the way she is. She’s too shy to speak up for herself most of the time, so any kind of bullying she receives rests over her like a cursed halo. Her timid nature makes it difficult for her at times. She has a terrible case of stage-freight and reciting speeches will be the death of her. Speaking in front of her peers fray her nerves. When she’s nervous, her voice shakes and her body trembles. HISTORY MOTHER clara jane cooper FATHER charles dean weber, deceased BROTHERS none SISTERS none PETS none, unfortunately OTHER mrs. and mr. weber THE STORY Clara Cooper had herself convinced she was in love. As a night at a party grew later into the night, Charles’ request to get away from the crowd became more and more appealing. They left the homecoming dance to walk around the school campus. As they sat behind the commons, held each other and kissed, it wasn’t difficult for simple kisses to become something more. Clara was a sophomore when she had met Charles. She was a well-behaved girl, one with outstanding work ethic and even more impressive grades. Charles tended to slack, but Clara helped make up for it. The two were young and in love. Their love was ultimately put to the test the day Clara rushed into Charles’ outstretched arms to tell him she was pregnant. Charles was afraid, of course. As a senior in high school, he didn’t want to harbor the responsibility of a baby girl or boy. Clara wasn’t prepared either, but she knew they’d have a shot at raising their baby right as long as they stuck together. So they did. Only when the baby’s gender—a girl—was announced did everything seem so entirely real. Charles went with Clara to every appointment. Near the end of Clara’s pregnancy, she had been sure she was about to go into labor one night. Charles rushed her to the hospital, but it was a false alarm. As they drove home, Charles did his best to comfort Clara. He didn’t see the incoming drunk driver that had run a red light. The car was impacted, Charles was killed, and Clara found herself conceiving a baby girl that very same night. She named the baby Devyn. It was a lonely night for Clara considering her parents had died when she was younger and Charles’ parents were too wrapped up in his death to come see their granddaughter. Clara never dared to tell anyone, but she had never been so lonely in her life. When it came time for Clara to bring Devyn home, their residence was questioned. Her foster parents had never approved of the baby. She knew bringing Devyn into their home would only degrade her outlook on herself as she grew. She had been living in Charles’ home, but she knew she felt guilty returning to their home after his death. Mrs. Weber insisted Clara stay with them. Hastily, she took the offer. Although they gave Clara and Devyn a place to stay, they were already in a bit of a financial rut. They could not afford to give Clara and Devyn food or supplies. Clara was forced to find a way to manage it on her own. At the age of seventeen, she resulted in dropping out of high school to work as a maid at the local motel. It was in a shady part of town, but she did anything to make sure her little girl was happy and healthy. On the side, she saved money to find a place of her own to raise Devyn. The Weber home was nice, but Clara knew she was a burden to them. She was an aching reminder of their son. In their eyes, Clara could see they wished she had died rather than Charles. If she had, they didn’t need to worry about a baby nor their mother. There came a point in time when Clara wanted to give up, but she couldn’t do that to her baby girl. When she said ‘mommy’, the world grew a little bit brighter. It was her baby girl that propelled her forward in life. Devyn was now her only life’s purpose. When Clara was nineteen, she had mustered enough money to afford a small mobile home down in the RV park. It wasn’t the most luxurious place to live, but she couldn’t stand living in the Weber home any longer. Devyn was growing. She needed her own room. Clara tried her best to make the musty trailer a home. She hung up pictures and bought inexpensive furniture. She used most of her paychecks on food and supplies for Devyn. They were barely managing. They needed more money. Clara befriended the old retired man next door. She even convinced him to watch Devyn when she had to work. She was working two jobs now. Devyn didn’t particularly like the grouchy old man, but he had cable, so she was able to watch her favorite programs. Clara couldn’t afford television or a phone line, so the television was a luxury item for the small four year old. When the old man wasn’t willing to watch the toddler, Clara came home to pick her up and brought her to work with her. Devyn didn’t yet understand how stressed her mother really was. At only five, she wasn’t able to judge character. Things became somewhat easier when Devyn began going to elementary school. Because she had begun reading in substitution of watching television, she was able to pick up many of the concepts taught very quickly. She was a shy baby, having not interacted much with others up until them, but she was able to blossom just fine in the learning environment. She proved to be a lot like Clara in that aspect. Clara tried dating as Devyn grew, but each time proved to be unsuccessful. It depressed her. She couldn’t help but feeling as though she missed out on the best years of her life. She didn’t blame Devyn, nor would she ever. She was happy to watch her daughter grow into a beautiful, level-headed young lady. Nevertheless, she felt as though she was failing Devyn. She went as far as beginning the adoption process, but Devyn had convinced her not to after several fits of displeasure. In seventh grade, she had gone with a friend to her dance studio for bring-a-friend night. It was difficult for Devyn, but she grew to love it in that small amount of time. This particular friend knew of Devyn’s financial distress. When Devyn said she wished she could go, her friend told her to sign up. When Devyn shook her head and told her friend she couldn’t afford it, her friend’s mother didn’t take it too well. She talked to Clara and offered to pay for Devyn’s tuition. Clara refused the offer. Devyn had never told her she wanted to dance. She knew it’d be unwise for her to try and pay for the lessons herself, but she refused being dependent on other people. Clara paid for Devyn’s dance lessons until she could no longer afford it. Devyn was disappointed, but she found a way to go to the lessons without paying. She snuck into the dance studio’s empty room and watched through a one-way window. Devyn found no harm in doing so, but Clara soon insisted she stopped doing so when she found out. Devyn obliged. Although she loved to dance, she never told anyone about her hobby. It was her little secret. It was all she wanted to focus on. That was until the power went out anyway. Clara hadn’t been able to pay the electric bill. Devyn couldn’t help the anger that accompanied the lack of electricity. They had so few things. All her friends had nice clothes, cell phones, laptops, and trampolines. What did she have? No television, no laptop, no cell phone, and now, no electricity. All she was able to do was maintain a high grade point average and stay out of trouble. That’s all Clara wanted from her, but it wasn’t enough. As soon as she could, she began working two part time jobs. Because of her behavior and timid nature, she was soon taunted with her new label: Nerd. It bothered Devyn, but after talking it through with Clare, she discovered it wasn't so bad. They have always been close. Devyn constantly feels like a burden to this day, but she had made a promise to herself: She’d graduate high school, go to college, and find a way to make a living for her mother. She’d find someone for Clara to fall in love with again, and maybe, just maybe, Clara might have another child one day. She’d have a child she could love without the matter of money constantly burning a hole in her mind. Devyn feels as though it’s her life purpose if anything else. Devyn continues to be a hidden dancer. Clara wants her to be on the dance team, but Dev doesn't. BEHIND THE MASK ALIAS char EXPERIENCE three years. FOUND US out your boob.
